Staying healthy in both body and mind is so important when dealing with the strains of modern urban living. Which is why I’d like to introduce you to Leslie Saglio, a wellness coach and yoga teacher who heads up the London outpost of SERENE Social – a women’s wellness and networking community.

I first started working with Leslie when I helped her design her professional website. And I was able to witness the amazing work she and SERENE are doing when I dropped into their rooftop yoga session at London’s Coq D’Argent.

Leslie and the whole SERENE Social community run some really inspirational events and it only seemed right to spread the word and share her infectious positivity with you. So here we go, over to you Leslie. Readers, I hope you feel inspired!

Hi Leslie. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you became a yoga and wellness teacher..

I’m originally from California and after having a long distance relationship with my French fiancé between LA and London, we got engaged and I decided to do the big move to London in 2006 (we now live in Notting Hill). I took time off to enjoy my two young children and in 2010 my life completely changed. After witnessing my parents and best friend battle serious illness, I knew these difficult experiences were meant to make me a better person on the other side. I was inspired to live a more healthy and holistic lifestyle for my children and for myself.  This led me on a journey that has me now inspiring others as a yoga teacher, Energy 4 Life© Wellness Coach and London Lead for SERENE Social. I feel blessed to simply light the path for others to start their own journey towards a more purpose filled life.

What is SERENE Social and how did you get involved in it?

I was visiting New York in April 2013 for a long weekend, celebrating my husband’s birthday and took part in a rooftop yoga session at The James Hotel, where we were staying. It was here I met co-founder of SERENE, Millana Snow.

The rooftop yoga was an amazing experience and I came back to London with an incredible energy from it.  I kept in touch with Millana and heard about all the wonderful things they were doing with SERENE Social in NYC.  I knew I wanted to get involved in bringing their community to London and it wasn’t until January 2014 while doing their global online course Get THANKFUL, that SERENE London was born.

There was this incredible energy and abundance flowing from the daily, month long gratitude practice. Their lead teacher Bee Bosnak was going to be in London for the OM Yoga show and it was a wonderful opportunity to bring SERENE to our city.  In May 2014 we launched our London chapter at South Kensington’s Evolve Wellness Centre with Bee Bosnak’s Heal Yourself yoga workshop;  I assisted and did the Reiki energy healing throughout the workshop.

We’ve had an incredible response from women, saying our community and content is definitely needed in London.  We had a successful summer rooftop yoga series at Coq d’Argent and are there now for our Sweat Lodge winter series.  We’ve partnered with some beautiful and conscious brands such as Neal’s Yard Remedies, Sweaty Betty, and Liforme.

There are so many different types of yoga these days. How is SERENE Social yoga different?

What sets SERENE Social’s yoga sessions apart from others is that they’re collaborative experiences that focus on making authentic connections with like-minded women. Our yoga classes are powerful and uplifting and are usually followed with a breakfast where women can gather and commune about life, their passions and common interests. 

Tell us about the Sweat Lodge classes that SERENE Social now runs in London.

SERENE’s Sweat Lodge is running until March 28th and our global Summer rooftop yoga series will launch this May across London, New York and Los Angeles. In London we will once again return to the beautiful rooftop gardens of Coq d’Argent set amongst the stunning view of London’s historic landmarks.

Our classes are suitable for all levels and guests can expect a powerful and uplifting experience for the body, spirit and mind.

What else can we expect from the SERENE Social programme for the rest of 2015? 

There’ll be more amazing classes and events in beautiful places such as Shoreditch House, monthly cooking workshop and dinners and incredible online courses such as Body Love Body Bliss with our Tantra expert, Roxana Hewett.

What are your main pieces of advice for those looking to lead a healthier lifestyle in 2015?

Say Om.  Practice yoga and learn how to meditate to reduce stress and stay zen. Focusing on the breath and sensation can release what’s constricting your physical body, letting you tap into – and work through -what’s happening on a deeper level. It also gives you access to your true, blissful nature  

Walk it out. If possible, skip the tube or bus, as the commute alone can be a huge source of stress in cities. Or take the time to get out and walk in the park or sit under a tree. Being outdoors in the expansive, fresh air, surrounded by nature calms you and uplifts your energy.

Think Positively. Where the mind goes energy follows. Observe your language, consciously speaking positive words and propel yourself in the right direction. Everyday we produce as many as 50,000 thoughts, where our mindset governs our actions leading to the results of our life. Eliminate negative thoughts for a positive life.
