How to Finally Let Go of Limiting Beliefs
“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. ~ Wayne Dyer
As an avid global traveller, I’m all for experiencing life to the fullest. But I realise (and appreciate) that sometimes leaving may not always be an option. We have responsibilities, commitments and maybe not a lot of holiday (a.k.a. vacation). In today’s blog I share how you can start to live more fully right where you are, without the need for a plane or passport. It’s about shifting your perspective and letting go of limiting beliefs– even right in your hometown.
Just because we may move away to a different city or country doesn’t mean our history and problems go away. I know – I’ve been there. 10 years ago I moved nearly 6,000 miles away from everything I ever knew, excited by opportunity to start a new life. But any painful memories and limiting beliefs that may have held me back in Los Angeles were right there with me in London. Any and all “baggage” comes with you as carry-on or checked in luggage.
There’s no amount of distance you can ever travel to replace the inner work for true growth.
Thankfully to years of investing in myself, I’ve been able to progress, not perfect, as a mother, wife, daughter, entrepreneur, and every other role.
Each and every day there will be ups and downs, with an opportunity to grow and evolve to the next, best version of you. It’s about learning how to become more conscious and skillful to manage those “downs” so the distance between them becomes less and less.
Life is about progression not perfection.
You don’t have to move out of country to create a new life and finally start to let go of the limiting beliefs that are holding you back. You can give yourself permission today wherever you may be. Working with clients as an international coach, yoga teacher, writer, and speaker here is a simple four-step process to let go and let flow into your life:
1. Identify Pattern: Notice a negative/limiting pattern or block that seems to repeat in your life. Continually connect with your motivation for change, whereby the more quickly change can occur. Remember baby steps – Rome wasn’t built in a day! Work with one issue or behavior at a time.
2. Look Inward: Bring your attention to your internal landscape and notice the triggers of your negative patterns. Sense the shifts in feelings, thoughts, and body language that reveal you are thinking or acting out of an old pattern. Observe, without any judgment, what’s happening in your body – energetically, emotionally, mentally, and physically. Do a practice that can help you disrupt the patterns in the moment. For example, stop what you’re doing and simply take five deep breaths or repeat a positive affirmation to yourself.
3. Make a Commitment: Hold yourself accountable for the changes you want to make in your life, for a better life. Write it all down. Track your progress by keeping a journal. This practice of self-inquiry can help to shift your state in the moment to an eventual natural state.
4. Acknowledge Yourself: Take joy in even the smallest changes and practice compassion for yourself when you experience setbacks. Each step in the right direction has an exponential effect on your health and well-being.
As always, I’d love connecting with you and hear about your experience of how you changed your life and how you’re making progress, not perfection. Head over to the comments section below to share your thoughts.
With love and gratitude,
