Make this Valentine’s More Meaningful
“Wherever you are, and whatever you do, be in love” ~ Rumi
Whether you’re spending the holiday with friends, your significant other or on your own, Valentine’s Day is about love and really about showing how much you care by showing how well you know your partner (or yourself). But in this day and age we tend to express our love through gifts. Instead of the cliché gift of roses, boxed chocolates or an overpriced dinner, I invite you to instead consider celebrating your connection, being thoughtful and romantic while leaning on effort instead of money. This year try to shift your perspective and think the most romantic without breaking the bank.
Here are my top five questions to ask yourself when preparing for this Valentine’s Day:
- “What brings him/her joy?” I encourage you to really think about what brings your Valentine joy. Allow your gift to display just how much you’ve taken note of their favourite things to do. Whether they’re a music buff, read fiction books, or love practicing yoga, you can create a tailored experience to incorporate this into the day.
- “What can I make from my heart?” This can be as simple as drawing a bath followed by a foot rub, a home cooked dinner, or a greeting card. Nothing says, “I love you” more than writing it out and having a permanent memento from the special day.
- “What can we do together?” Maybe consider an experiential gift which is always fun, such as tickets to see a show or have a spa day together. Sharing an experience together can be a gift in itself. Don’t feel the need to spend lots of money on an extravagant gift.
- “What’s most important for our couple?” If perhaps you’re in favour of saving money you can decide to skip this particular holiday altogether. Instead make the intention to commit to having a “date night” at least once a month to keep the relationship ignited and exciting.
- “How do I spend the day alone?” If you’re single, that’s perfectly okay too. Make a date with yourself at the spa or get together with other single friends and celebrate your friendship. Love yourself first and trust that you’re exactly where you need to be. We tend to attract the vibration we give others so keep being self-aware and don’t settle for less.
This year I encourage you to remember that when choosing a gift there’s nothing intrinsic about wealth (and all the amenities it can buy) that guarantees happiness. At the end of the day, what matters most is being fully present with undivided attention and unconditional love. Because truly the best things in life are free.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
